Top Tips For Teaching Yoga In Schools - Tip #10: Oh Sh**, I Got The Job...Now What?

Hi there,

It’s been a while! My normal Tuesday / Saturday posting schedule was disrupted these past two weeks as I spent the last two Saturday’s driving to and from the Adirondacks, where I took myself on a much needed solo getaway in nature, and tried my best to disconnect in our ever connected world.

So, my apologies if you were looking forward to Saturday posts these last two weeks, but the good news is, I’m back on my regular schedule, and today I want to share a few tips with you regarding what to expect and consider once a school has said “yes” to you.

I hope you enjoy this week’s tip, and if you want to hear more about my journey, I recently shared my story on The Kids Yoga Podcast.

Tip #10: Oh Sh**...I Got The Job...Now What?

We’ve reached the 10th tip, which also happens to be one of my favorites, because it focuses on what happens when you actually land your dream job teaching yoga in schools. So, what does happen? Well, lots of things, but here are a few pieces of advice:

  1. Get as many supplies as possible donated. Seriously. Everyone has extra yoga mats lying around. Share your supply needs with your FB community, and you’ll be pretty surprised with how much you can get for free.

  2. Go with the Flow: It’s going to be messy. You’re going to feel like you have no idea what you’re doing. But you will learn. Quickly. Teaching in schools is a LOT of trial and error. What works one day might not work the next. Give yourself permission to try new things, and don’t be afraid to ask for help!

  3. It’s Going to Look Different: Be okay with that. It’s not about the perfect downward dog. It’s about getting kids in their bodies, building their body/mind awareness, and giving them tools. They’re not all going to get it. They’re not all going to like it. But you have to remember, that what you are doing is valuable. It is needed. And kids will benefit from it.

Tip Takeaway: Start thinking about what you need to make your classes successful. Make a list of what you need to buy, and what you can get donated, and begin reaching out to your networks for those donated items!
