Top Tips For Teaching Yoga In Schools - Tip #11: Be Flexible And Creative

Hi!

March is here, and thankfully here in Baltimore, the weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer. I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely ready for spring!

Todays top tip for teaching yoga in schools focuses on the importance of being flexible and creative. But, the key here is to have an organized structure and program from which you can be flexible and creative.

I hope you find today’s tip helpful, and as always, please feel free to share your thoughts or blog requests in the comments!

Tip #11: Be Flexible And Creative

Whether you approach a school wanting to teach during the day, after school, part-time, or full-time, you have to be flexible and creative! If you hear a ‘no’ from a principal, it’s probably not because they don’t want the program, but because it doesn’t fit into their program the way you’ve wanted or anticipated it to. So, when you hear no, get creative!

Listen to what you’re hearing the principal say, and don’t be afraid to adapt your model and your approach. In fact, go into your interviews anticipating two or three different ways your program could be implemented based on the schools needs.

Think about alternate ways you can structure your program to meet the schools needs. Can what you planned as an after school program be stretched or extended to offer during the school day? Or vice versa? Can what you planned for first grade actually be taught to third graders?  Is there a way to incorporate a nutrition or journaling component to what you’re offering to better fit the needs of the school?

Learning how to be creative and adapt your program to fit the needs of a school will go a long way towards helping you secure your dream teaching role.

Tip Takeaway: Draft a list of three different ways your program could be implemented in schools. Get specific and clear, be flexible and creative, while also staying true to what you want to be teaching! You’d be surprised how many different ways you can make what you had planned work!
